Before You Arrive
It's best not to eat a large meal before coming in for your appointment. Arrive neither full nor hungry. If you’re running on empty, a piece of fruit is a great pre-appointment snack!
You are encouraged to drink lots of water after your appointment. Visit the restroom before your session to ensure you are comfortable during your treatment.
What To Wear
Most clients find loose, comfortable clothing ideal to allow access to forearms, lower legs, hands and feet. Depending on the course of treatment, Hope may need to access your back, abdomen or gluteus (i.e. to treat sciatic pain). Some clients bring along a change of clothes and slip intoyoga/sweatpants and a t-shirt prior to treatment.
When You Arrive
If it’s your first visit please arrive 10 minutes before your scheduled appointment. You will need to complete a brief health history form.
Hope will first review your health history form and discuss your concerns. Hope will conduct an initial assessment, which may include looking at your tongue, taking your pulse, and just observing your energetic state. Then she will discuss your treatment plan which may include acupuncture, acupressure, cupping, gua sha, reiki or a combination of therapies. A full explanation of the various treatments is included in Other Common Questions. Hope may use special aromatic oils to aid in your treatment. Please let her know if you are sensitive to smells and she will skip the essential oils.
Most appointments will last between 45 minutes and one hour. Once the needles have been inserted, they need to remain in for 28 minutes to complete their energetic loop and effectively aid in balancing out the patient's energy.
What Will I Feel Like Afterwards
Each treatment session is unique and no two patients are likely to feel exactly the same after their session. However, some common experiences include:
- A sense of being sleepy or deeply relaxed
- Energized and a little rev'ed up
- Calm, focused and centered
- Cool or cold, many clients feel like their body temperature drops (blood pressure too), so it's a great idea to stay warm and bundled up afterwards
- Drink lots of fresh water to help flush out the toxins which were just released from your cells
- Avoid vigorous activity or athletic pursuits after a treatment, it's best to let the Qi or "vital energy" settle into your body and keep up the harmonious balance which was just established
What To Do After a Session
Drink lots of warm or room temperature water to help flush the toxins out of your system. "Chill", hang out, relax and enjoy a quiet afternoon/evening. Many patients might notice they are very relaxed. Some patients notice they are extra sensitive to external stimuli like a loud TV or radio, and prefer a quite atmosphere after their treatment. Vigorous activity like running, working out or an active yoga practice are best delayed until the next day. And some patients might notice they feel slightly cool, so it's important, especially in the winter, to stay warm and bundled up after a session.
